What Is Your Life About?
“So, what is your life about?” asked the Voice.
I was startled, and looked around to see who is speaking. There was no one in sight. Just silence. Complete silence. Absolute silence.
I tried to make sense of my surroundings. I was standing right on the edge of the ocean, turquoise waves caressing my feet, blueish cloudy sky hovering over my head, brownish sand holding my weight and yellowish orange streaks of light dancing far away on the horizon.
There was no sound, not even the sound of waves.
I realized that I have never experienced such silence in my life. A silence so profound and so complete that it was the only thing I was experiencing, and then the Voice…
“You are thinking about the silence, right?”
I looked around again and didn’t see anyone, yet at the same time, I felt as comfortable and at ease with myself as I possibly could.
“Yes. I am thinking about the silence, but who are you? Where are you?” I asked.
“I Am!” said the Voice.
“But where?” I asked again.
“Where I Am, “the where” doesn’t matter.”
“But I can’t see you and why are you asking me that what is my life about?” I asked.
“It’s not Me who is asking. It’s you who is asking this question through me.”
“Huh?”
“Yes. But never mind that, just reply. What is your life about?”
“I don’t know. I’m just living, I suppose.” I replied.
“You suppose?”
“I mean I’m just living, you know. Just living!”
“You are not living if you don’t know what is your life about. In this case, your life is living you and you are just passing time.” said the Voice.
I felt a bit disappointed at myself, that I am unable to give a satisfactory answer to the question, that what is my life about.
“Don’t feel disappointed. It’s a useless emotion.” said the Voice.
“Hmmm…okay. You tell me then, that what is my life all about?” I asked.
“The same thing.” said the Voice.
“What same thing?” I asked feeling a bit irritated.
“The same thing that everyone’s life is all about.” said the voice calmly.
“And what might that be?” I asked.
“To serve your fellow human beings, one person at a time.” said the voice.
“What?”
“You don’t get it, do you?” the Voice asked as if smiling at me with compassion.
“Well, actually, I do not.” I said.
“Then don’t. Don’t try to understand it. Just do it and you’ll understand.” said the Voice.
“But…”
“That’s the problem with you. All your buts!”
“But still…..” I said.
“See! There are no buts in life. There is only doing. Just do it. Just serve and you won’t need these buts anymore.”
“Bu…”
“Stop! Don’t say it.” the Voice interrupted me.
“Okay, okay fine! But is that all my life is about?”
“You said it again.” said the Voice and then I heard a compassionate laughter.
“Yes, that is all your life is about. Serve!” the Voice said.
“Serve with your words, your smiles, your profession, your thoughts, your pocket, your corporation, your business, your blog, your books, everything that you got, including your Self.”
“And what will I get in return, from all this serving around other people.” I asked.
The Voice felt like smiling at me, like a father smiles at his child, asking silly questions.
“Service, of course.” I heard the Voice say and then I woke up…
SHARING IS CARING

I enjoyed reading this! Was it seriously a dream, or just creative writing?
Was it a dream? I ask myself the same question Sandra.
Thank you for taking the time to read it and comment.
Very nice. I think I could hear the Voice
This is such a vivid post, so deep and wise and simple. It really is all about giving. Also about giving from a place of pure heart and peace. To just give, always. Thank you for this all important message.
So what did the Voice say to you Uzma? Mind sharing?
Thank you for your encouragement and comment.
Ah I meant I could the Voice in your post
but since you ask the Voice within me says thank you for great friends, the Voice says that life is giving me opportunity and I need to take it, the Voice says, all is already well, I just have to see it.. The Voice says I am here to serve, but my mind doesn't know how just yet? So the Voice has left me confused.
Don't worry. The how will be revealed to you. Just stay tuned
Beautiful and uplifting. The Voice once told me to "think certain thoughts" – something I didn't quite understand at the time. Now I realize it is another form of Service!
Thank you Linda. I read that post of yours on your blog.
Very creative – and you are much better than me at having the dialogues with yourself – in fact, you are rather severe in that Voice role. Great message though – Unforgettable delivery so it shall stay with me! Well-done Abubakar!
Thank you Farnoosh for your encouragement.
How severe am I?
I was just teasing. It had a superb effect altogether, severity or not!
