Values List – A List of 400 Values to Live By
Here is a list of 400 values that I have compiled. As far as I know, it is the most comprehensive list you can find on the Internet. You can go through it and see which values attract you the most.
You will also find a link below that will take you to a free online tool to help you narrow down your core personal values.
What are values?
Values are simply the rules that you want to live by because living them will allow you to experience a fulfilling life.
Where do you get Values from?
In most cases, you get your values from your parents, environment and social conditioning. It is a powerful experience to actually sit down and choose your own values.
How to prioritize your values?
It will be impossible to focus on all 400 of them. You will have to prioritize the values you deliberately choose for yourself.
I will recommend picking 12 core values and then putting them in order of importance. After that you can focus on 1 value per month or per week, giving all your attention to implement it in your life and see the results.
Remember that values mean nothing without action. For example if you value courage and you don’t act courageously in your day to day life then that value is not important enough for you.
Choose your values thoughtfully, visualizing circumstances, situations where you can actually take action in line with your chosen value and then live by that value till the time it becomes your second nature.
Online Tool you can use to discover and prioritize your values
Here is an online tool created by Douglas Wagoner that will help you discover and prioritize your values. His list uses about 90% of the values listed below. You can always come back to this list whenever you need it.

Great article!
I really like how you say values without action means nothing. So true. And this is an awesome list of values.
I did an exercise like the one you suggested a while ago – it is very powerful. Time for me to do it again
I have to strongly disagree with this Abubakar
“Remember that values mean nothing without action. For example if you value courage and you don’t act courageously in your day to day life then that value is not important enough for you.”
It doesn’t mean it’s not important enough, but it does mean they are not in alignment. There can be any number of reasons or value conflicts that stop people aligning and whereas of course it can be because it’s not important enough, it doesn’t have to be by any stretch.
I also don’t believe there are more than a few dozen core values and probably a lot less. Wealth for instance cannot be a value imho. Simply because for most people it’s what wealth gives them that is the real value. if wealth gives you freedom, then freedom is the value and not wealth.
Ah Tim
So good to see you here. And lemme tell you, I value your thoughts and respect your taking the time to speak your mind here.
The alignment point is definitely valid. We can value a Value (intellectually, even emotionally) and still not act accordingly, due to some inner conflict. Correct, but then what do we get out of valuing that Value if it is not helping us practically? What’s the value in that?
And as for Wealth, not being a value, that is, in my opinion a subjective thing. For many people it is a value in itself and they equate it with freedom in their minds, like you said.
And I also believe that the actual values one lives by, are usually less than a dozen. The list is provided just to stretch the readers’ mind a bit, give him ideas to think, and let him make his own choices.
Thank you for your excellent feedback. It is much appreciated.
When working with clients what I really want to know is what they want.
So taking wealth as an example, if they want that because they think it will give them freedom, then I really know as a a coach, that it’s not wealth they’re really after, but what they think wealth will give them.
The reality is some of the wealthiest people feel like they have no freedom. So then it’s a question of getting the client to think differently and focus on the real value that the other ‘value’ sits on top of.
Agree there is little value in having a value that we don’t align with, but billions of people (me included) do that, at least some of the time.
It’s a fascinating topic and I’m toying with posting a response if I can get my head round it!
I can appreciate where you are coming from (life coach’s experience) and I’d love to see a post on this topic on your blog. Please do toy with it and get your head around it because we might just learn something great from your response.
Wow I never knew there were this many vaules I could choose from
Relating to freedom and diversity I think this list should also include HUMAN RIGHTS (which would mean the rights of all persons regardless of sex, race, gender, age, ability, etc.)
I think that when people discrimminate against others, they aren’t truely living by their values. Can you really value kindness if you are not open to being kind to someone because of the colour of their skin? Can you really value sexuality if you don’t accept someone simply because their sexually is different than yours? Can you really value respect if you by default have less of it for women (or certain “types” of women)?
I think some people may only apply certain values within their family sphere, maybe a different set in their work environment, etc. But valuing human rights should be a value that we have in all spheres.
