Hooking Up with your Higher Self

higher_self Have you ever thought of yourself as two persons residing in the same body?

Did you ever feel that two distinctly different but deeply interconnected entities share the same ethereal space, called your consciousness?

I have, and believe that I am not the only one who experience this subtle duality of one’s nature.

There must be some moments in your life where you might have felt this too.

You are not just what you think you are. There are two of you in you.

YOU = you + You

The smaller “you” is the part of yourself that you are consciously aware of and the bigger “You” is what exists beyond your mental boundaries.

Your smaller self is that part of yourself which is reading this article right now. It is the part which you see in the mirror everyday.

It has a body.

It has emotions.

It has hopes and dreams.

It despairs and feel joy.

It laughs and cries.

It is the part which moves around in the time-space continuum called the “worldly life”  and do stuff.

What is your Higher Self?

The bigger You is someone who is deeply connected with the smaller “you” and yet goes way beyond just being your normal, day to day self.

Higher Self is the part that is the “silent observer”.

Nothing affects this part of you.

No death can touch it.

No sorrow can make it sad.

No despair can reach it.

It is beyond sadness and happiness.

It is beyond despair and joy.

It just Is and this part of yourself is your Higher Self.

Think of your higher self as an all knowing, loving and wise parent who watches over her child and whenever he is about to make a drastic mistake, tries to nudge him in the right direction.

What does your higher self do?

The Higher Self gives clues, gentle nudges but do not force anything upon you. Simply because it knows very well that some lessons in life can only be learnt after making mistakes. It understands that making mistakes is part of being human. It is part of the process called “Life”.

Your Higher Self is what makes you think deeply. Questions like, Who am I?, What do I want in life? How should I contribute? are thrown in the playground of your conscious mind by your Higher Self to make you realize that you are not confined to this planet and this world only. Your roots are in the Divine.

Your Higher Self helps you get over the tragic losses of your life. It does that by showing you a bigger picture of the Reality. It tells you that whatever happens, it happens for a very valid reason. It also tells you that all losses and all profits are temporary and the only thing that counts is what you learnt from those experiences.

How to get in touch with your higher self?

There are 3 specific ways to get in touch with your Higher Self and cultivate a deeper connection with it. Here they are:

Meditate to get in touch with your higher self

Meditation helps you open the rusty and closed doors of your awareness. It expands your mental horizons and brings you closer to your true nature.

Meditation opens the channel between you and your Higher Self. It does so by clearing the mental mess and polishing your subconscious receptive powers. When the noise levels are down you can hear and pick up on the signals of your Higher Self clearly.

One of the most effective meditation techniques that I know of, especially regarding opening the communication channel between you and your Higher Self is The Silent Observer meditation technique. I will post about this specific technique in my next post.

Listen to Your Intuition, it is the voice of your higher self

Other than meditation, another way to get in touch with your Higher Self is by listening to the signals sent by your Higher Self. Some people call it intuition.

How do you do that specifically? The way to get in touch with your Higher Self is by consciously injecting time between your thoughts and actions. In that time period, where you purposefully create a gap between your thoughts and your actions lies the domain of intuition.

Here is a specific example to understand this concept better. Lets say someone very close to your heart has done something wrong which makes you feel disappointed and angry. Usually you will react immediately and lash out or get into a fight or simply stop speaking to that person.

I, on the other hand, will suggest that instead of reacting immediately you push the pause button of your mind. Calm yourself down and then let your intuition, your Higher Self, have its say.

It will speak to you, if you listen attentively and without prejudice. Listen to it and then choose your reaction in the light of what your intuition said to you. You can save yourself a lot of embarrassment by doing so.

Wait for your higher self to talk to you

If you can not or do not want to meditate or listen to your intuition to get in touch with your Higher Self, then you have to wait for it to make its presence known to you by force.

How does that happen? It happens when you go through life-altering experiences like a serious accident, a heart break that really hurts you or the loss of a loved one and so on.

When the center, around which your life revolves, shifts and your life turns into a mess, then the Higher Self moves in to help you out of that mess and let you know that you have to think about your life differently.

You might have heard the stories of people who have gone through near death experiences and how those experiences changed their lives forever. Those were the times when their Higher Selves made their presence known to them by force.

Here is a book you should read, which is about a woman who went through a near death experience and then lived to share it with us. It’s a very moving story. Check it out (affiliate link) Embraced by the Light.

Jill Bolte Taylor Stroke Video

Here is a very touching video of Jill Bolte Taylor who suffered a stroke and recalls what she felt during that time when she was so near to her own death.

However you decide to do it, I suggest that you do open the communication channel between your conscious mind and your Higher Self.

The rewards are endless and the living gets way more easier, when your connection with your Higher Self is strong. The few decades that you get to spend on this planet become much more peaceful and nourishing, not only for you but for all those around you too.

  1. Abubakar: What an amazing post. You have done such a great job of describing our 2 selves and I am moved by your words. I think the duality of self is one of the most amazing realizations we can ever have and once we truly understand who we are and what our responsibilities are to our true self, we open ourselves up to a life that will unfold in so many amazing ways. As you mentioned, it is all about being able to listen to your inner self and allowing it to be your guide. I am such a fan of Jill Bolte Taylor. I have read her book and she has so many amazing insights. Thanks for sharing that video. Great post and great thoughts.

    • You are so right in saying that one of the most important realizations is being aware of our dual natures. I'm glad that we share the same values in life and thank you for your kind words.

Beautiful article. I get a lot of grief for referencing myself as a "god" because of the unlimited power of our being. We are way more than this almost useless physical structure that we are confined in. Our soul is boundless and the connection to the Universal Source.

I know that this article will raise the vibrations of anyone who reads it.

    Great work!

    Abubakar,

I liked your post about our higher selves. I liked the way you broke it down between the two "yous."

I also find in my own life that the things you mentioned, such as intuition, meditation and listening to your higher self are true ways to get in touch with this special part of us.

To me, it's absolutely amazing that we have this duality. I think our higher self is the god-like part of us. It requires work on our part to learn to hear our higher power and even more work to learn to really listen to it:~)

    Excellent post. Thanks:~)
