How to be Yourself

How to be yourself You have heard it, read about it and may have yourself said it to people on occasion – Be Yourself.

But do you know what does it actually mean to be yourself? Delving deeper into this advice, can you outline the specific steps that one can take to be himself?

Aren’t we all already who we are? I mean how can someone be someone else? There is only one of you and that is you. So what is all this stuff about being yourself about?

I have been reading it for ages now. Be yourself, be yourself and I have always wondered whether  I need to be reborn with different genes and a different face and in the home of some different parents in some other country to be myself?

Kind of a strange piece of advice it is. So vague.

I am here to tell you that you already are yourself. Not only that, but also that you are the only person on the face of this planet who has this privilege. Only you can be you.

You can not be duplicated in any way. Your actions may be copied to some extent by someone but you, the real you, simply are beyond being someone else. Your uniqueness is unique only to you. Have no doubt that.

So what does this two word phrase – be yourself – actually mean?

Here is what I think it means. Maybe it resonates with you and maybe not but allow me to share my insight with you.

Being yourself actually means the opposite of what it seems to mean, which is that you already are yourself so don’t try to be someone else because you will not be able to do that. Got it?

The hardest part is not being yourself but the hardest part actually is to try to resist the societal influence coercing you to be like someone else.

Don’t become like an onion where you cover yourself with layers and layers of trying to be someone else or you will cry someday while peeling yourself. :)

Be like a grape instead, as it is, no layers that make you cry and a wonderful taste on top of that and I love grapes. :)

This is something to think about seriously. Shed your external layers, mental layers that you have been putting on your true self for years. Once you manage to do that, you will be able to see that you were never someone else anyway, at any time. You were just trying to be and you didn’t succeed and you never would have either.

Don’t try to be yourself, you already are. Just Be!

  1. Hi!
Read this post and I agree with you 101%. I have stopped being someone else by listening to my insights of late and applying what is right, at the right time n place n person. A certain amount of thinking is required to get your fundas clear and I hope my fellow readers who come across this article also find a means to know exactly who you are, just as I came to know about my self.

Thanks for this wonderful article Sunny. Keep your sunny side up always. Its nice to have a friend like you!

nice post Abubakar, Yes everyone already is :)

  3. Great post and I totally agree. Often times people go on a search and look to outside sources to figure out who they are and where they should go in life. The reality is that we have all these answers within us and if we just ask ourselves, the questions will come in time. It is all about being patient and knowing that you are your best advisor. You just have to find your way to that truth that is within you. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Like you said, "The reality is that we have all these answers within us and if we just ask ourselves, the questions will come in time." That's what it's all about anyway.

Hi Akubakar, nice to land on your blog. :)

Great article here. I like how you say it can be difficult to be ourselves but it's better to do this than to try and imitate someone else. I tried to do this in the earlier years of my life and it honestly made me miserable at times. When we realize that ourselves are right here and there's no need for resistance, we can go on to become more happy and peaceful inside.

Good job and great example with the onion!

When you asked what does it mean to be yourself…my immediate thought is to be the most pure Light filled, good Energy possible..to allow my heart to remain open to each moment as it is..and as you shared so eloquently to "be a grape"…:) I have the choice to add "protective layers" which are really barriers to truely living, or to experience life as I am….I choose as I am…I am perfectly made to be me..and when I embrace that life has a natural flow full of much wonder, delight, joy…when I choose to resist that I create struggle then..and I'd much prefer a struggle free, wonder filled life:)

Mmmm, love the post :) . I have to admit that i used to be little annoyed with those two words. I mean: of course I will be myself, who else could I be?! :) And those words never helped because there was one question remaining: “ok, I’ll be myself (of course! :) ), but is that good enough?”.

Eventually, I find much better phrase (and believe that “be yourself” was supposed to carry that message): “What you are, is great!” :) . So, yes – I couldn’t agree more with you: we don’t need to try to be like someone else to be good enough.
